Today we had a second class on food production and a class on finishing options and techniques (really neat stuff; something I definitely plan on learning more about!). The food production course was a lot like yesterday's--very interesting topic, but hard to stay 100% engaged in a virtual session. One very curious matter that was brought up was "humanure"--yes, it's exactly what you think. Not sure I'll be doing any of that...We also learned about the different types of worms out there and which are optimal for composting. In the finishing options/techniques class, some of the crew's work was showcased and it's truly a work of art! Creative flagstone cutting, custom concrete work, saltillo tile placing, and so much more!
Work at the job-site today was very "Silence of the Lambs." A classmate and I worked in a large tire cistern with one of the crew members to further secure wire mesh to the tires in preparation for the final layers of concrete. We put nails into the mesh, twisted them to secure them, then pounded them into the tires. This homemade cistern was being constructed in the place of four plastic cisterns in order to save money. With all of the labor that went into this endeavor (especially the pounding of the tires), it's hard to believe it's cheaper than the four underground cisterns; I suppose someone has done the math and justified the savings, though.
