Due to popular demand, we actually had class this morning--Earthship criticisms, part II. It was nice to be able to continue exploring this topic, and I appreciate the instructor taking time out of her weekend to conduct a class, but I also felt it went a wee bit too long. At the 2.5-hour mark, I decided it was time to respectfully head out and get the rest of the day started, as I had visitors coming later in the afternoon!
My Dad's cousin Richard and his partner Sandra were coming up to Taos from Santa Fe, and there were some errands I had to take care of beforehand. I headed to town to do my weekly load of laundry at the Spin & Sparkle Laundromat. With the laundry going, I then jetted over to the Post Office to get a sense for what it might cost to ship some items home. Foolishly, two weeks ago, I decided it would be a good idea to lug all of my recently purchased Earthship books out here. Pretty sure it's about 15 pounds of books. In fact, when I was checking my bag at Logan, the woman asked if I would be able to take some of the weight out, or else informed me I would be charged through the nose for going over the allotted weight for a checked bag. I obliged, opening my suitcase, removing the books, and opting instead for a combination of storing them in my carryon and carrying the rest. Never again. I trudged through Logan with what had to have been 25 pounds in my filled-to-the-seams carryon and several books in my arms. Anyhow, lesson learned; I will be shipping those well-traveled books back home.
After the Post Office, I wanted to grab a quick bite to eat at the Burger Stand. I was told there was some sort of fundraiser going on over there to raise money for an Earthship Biotecture staff member who had recently been mauled by a pack of 10+ feral dogs on the mesa, so I wanted to help the cause. Apparently she's ok, but super scary stuff. I ordered a delicious catfish po boy, along with some duck fat fries (which weren't quite worth the time I presume they took off my life...).
After fueling up my tank and collecting my laundry, it was back to Earthship Way. I met Richard and Sandra at the Visitor Center for a quick self-guided tour there (my first time in the Visitor Center--highly recommended if you're in the area!). Got the ok from our Academy Coordinator to take them on a tour of the Earthship I'm living in, which I was super excited for. I showed them my humble abode, pointing out the quirky features like my garden hose sink and shower faucets, the hole under the rock in the shower where one of the tarantulas lives, and my AC unit (a 30-foot vent pipe in the wall). I also took them up onto the roof and showed them our classroom, too. It was super cool to be able to show them where I had been living for the last two weeks and explain some of what I had learned.
After the tour, we headed out to the Taos Mesa Brewing for a quick beverage before our dinner reservations at Love Apple, a quaint farm-to-table restaurant. The food at Love Apple was phenomenal! Between the three of us, we ordered the House Made Blue and Yellow Corn Bread, Local Greens Salad, Tortilla Soup, Homemade Baked Tamale and Oaxacan Style Mole, Chicken Confit Love Apple Tacos, Smoked Cheese & Apple Quesadilla, Flourless Almond Chocolate Torte, and Challah Bread Pudding. So delicious! Thank you, Richard and Sandra!
